My Students

Our students are faced with contrasting realities between their community and school. As teachers we are constantly reminding our students of the importance proper behavior will have on their future. This effort requires patience, dedication, and creativity.

Currently our middle school is comprised of 560 students.

99% of the population is African American, 88% of our students are on free and reduced lunch, and 30% of the population requires specialized instruction. I teach English in a 6th grade classroom with an average of 27 students across three periods. A large majority of our students need constant reminders of what appropriate behavior looks like in the classroom and throughout the school. Their behavior is very much a product of broken homes and inconsistent role models in their lives.

My Project

Teaching is an ebb and flow of trial and error. Our 6th grade team is trying out a new behavioral data tracker for our classrooms. Every 6th grade teacher will have the same data tracker and expectations. The data tracker includes 10 categories with specific expectations for each categories, (Preparedness, warm up, Homework, participation,cleanliness, exit slip, on task, SLANT, hallway, and encourage and empower). Students earn points based on meeting the requirements outlined in our expectations. We will then post their scores on a data board. This will allow them to track their strengths and weaknesses regarding their behavior. Our hope is raising our students awareness of their strengths and weaknesses in regards to behavior will begin to shape them into mature ladies and gentlemen. The Toshiba Android will allow us to update their scores in an excel spreadsheet and provide real-time feedback on our smartboard.

A donation will help our teachers quickly track data during class.

This will allow us to give our students real time results and show them in the moment how their behavior is impacting their success.
