My students need a DREAM BIG LIBRARY! Round work tables, comfy chairs, study carrels, book shelves! This will be a space that fosters focus and independent learning.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I remember studying in my college library: late at night, sitting in a study carrel, books all around me, typing away on a paper for one class or another. Sometimes, I would crash out on one of the couches with a book and a highlighter, trying to get through my reading for the next day.
Maybe these weren't the most fun memories of my college experience, but I know they gave me a powerful feeling of independence and potential, like what I was working on was inspired and brilliant.
Surrounded by all that knowledge, by students working to solve the most pressing problems in the universe, I really felt a part of something important. You have all given me hope over the years as you have time and again invested in the future of my students through your donations to projects that I have posted. And now, you have inspired me to think BIGGER. I know that you all believe that no matter what geographic boundaries the bright young minds of BEES face, they deserve to prosper and continue their education. They have the people who believe in them; now they need the tools to succeed. I want to make my students feel that independence and potential, that desire for knowledge and that inspiration I felt in my college library.
My Project
It is with great excitement that I ask you to help us build our BEES DREAM BIG LIBRARY.
The DREAM BIG LIBRARY will be a space where students can go to conduct research, complete assignments and homework, collaborate on projects, seek help from teachers or student mentors, or just read an independent book. I envision a room decorated with memorabilia from our teachers’ colleges, filled with private work stations, a student-led help desk, tables to accommodate groups, and of course, comfy couches for reading. I want this to feel very different from a classroom, and different from any library my students have ever entered. I see my students coming to improve their papers and essays. I see students working collaboratively on projects, bouncing ideas off each other and getting excited about what they are studying. I see my eighth graders introducing their sixth grade peers to the computer skills they will need to succeed at BEES or helping with a challenging assignment.
I want my students to feel that they deserve to have a place like this in their school, as many do not have a place like this at home.
An investment like the DREAM BIG LIBRARY will show BEES students that we trust their independence, value their knowledge and skills, and feel they are worthy of a place like this. I want my students, when they walk into a college library for a first time to think, Hey, this is just like where I study, and know they belong there.
