Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our classroom is a community of learners. We create a culture where we work together to help one another grow as students and citizens. We learn from each other, challenge each other, and support each other. This year we will encourage one another to become more independent.
My school is an inner-city public school in New York.
I work in a general education classroom with students of all levels and abilities. My students are hard working, bright, and engaging. They like to push themselves to become better and are eager to become independent learners who are in control of their own learning.
This will be my 3rd year teaching 4th grade at this school. As a teacher, I try to reflect on my practice as often as possible. At the end of my last school year, I noticed that some of my 4th graders were too reliant on me for their learning. It is important to create a classroom atmosphere and community where students feel empowered to become in charge of their own education.
My Project
Through the materials I am requesting (iPads, math/reading/social studies games for small group work, and student homework planners) my students will have more opportunity to foster their own learning. For example, with the use of the iPad, my students will be able to track their own academic progress. Students will be also use applications on the iPad to choose activities that will help them work on areas in need of growth and they will have the ability to choose what those areas of need are. Students will also be able to use student homework planners to keep track of and manage their own work. Different math and reading games will allow students to work on different skills and keep each other accountable. For example, students can play the multiplication and division games together and help each other grow in these particular skills. All of these different activities and materials will help my students be in charge of their own learning!
It is incredibly important as a teacher that I not only instruct my students and guide them in their learning, but also give them the tools to take ownership and responsibility of their education.
This is not something that can be done overnight. Using these materials and activities in an open and safe classroom environment will allow my students to mature as learners and grow in confidence. My classroom will now be a place of independence!
