Bring 21st century skills to the forefront of this third grade classroom, and help them become green and paperless at the same time!
My students attend a K-12 rural Nebraska school.
Next year there will be 12-14 students in my class, with an even amount of girls and boys. The class that will be in third grade next year is a lively, wanting to learn, creative class. I have been looking forward to having this class since they were Kindergartners.
The community my students live in is an agricultural community. Their community would not survive if it wasn't for farmers. All the jobs in the community are connected with farming, from our local grocery store to our ice cream shop and our two banks and our auction company.
My Project
I am requesting 15 Acer chromebooks to be used daily in my third grade classroom. I have done extensive research on making my classroom paperless, and the benefits of the students becoming engaged in their own learning far outweighs the negatives of spending too much time online.
Through Google's chromebooks students can access Google Docs and share stories with others. It also allows me to check the stories online instead of using paper for their good copy and their sloppy copy. Learning how to write/type stories using a keyboard brings 21st century skills to my students' hands.
Allowing my students to take quizzes, tests, and complete their homework online also helps us save paper. Another benefit of them doing their work online is getting them used to computers, because Nebraska State Testing is online, and third grade is the first class to start taking them. I'm hoping test anxiety wouldn't be as prominent if we used the Chromebooks daily.
First and foremost students will gain 21st century learning skills and opportunities they wouldn't have otherwise.
Our country is trying to gain knowledge in this area and starting students young is a positive.
Next it helps our classroom become more environmentally aware of how much paper we waste and lets my future students think GREEN!
