Students in my classroom enter class, get a graphing calculator, and then head to their seat. It is part of a daily routine to have and use a graphing calculator. These graphing calculators are used to explore graphs, equations and concepts as well as for calculations of real-life applications.
My school is a suburban high school with over 40% of the students on free or reduced lunch.
Most of these students do not own a graphing calculator. The AAA batteries purchased with this project will be used to provide batteries for the classroom sets of graphing calculators that the math students use everyday in class.
My students are also high achieving and will need to be familiar and use graphing calculators on the ACT, SAT, and in college. By allowing my students to use graphing calculators regularly, they are more prepared for life beyond my classroom.
My Project
The AAA batteries purchased from this project will allow my students to have continued use of graphing calculators for years to come. With the graphing calculators, they will be able to investigate mathematical concepts, use calculators as a checking tool, and work with real-world applications without being overwhelmed by computation.
Investigations that students can do with the graphing calculator include discovering shapes of graphs of absolute value, quadratic, and other polynomial equations, investigating effects and shifts of these graphs, and looking for patterns on sequences and series. Students can use the graphing calculator to confirm that they graphed equations and calculated problems correctly. Real-world applications become even more meaningful when students can see the graph, maximums, and minimums, etc. without stressing about the decimals, etc.
This project will help improve my classroom because students will be able to use graphing calculators on a regular basis.
Students will become comfortable using the graphing calculator for my class, the end of course test, the ACT, SAT, college, and beyond. They will be able to use graphing calculators to let them investigate topics that might have overwhelmed them without the calculator.
