My students haven't always been engaged in school. They have felt disengaged, and like they don't belong. By bringing in ways that they can see science, and do a lab for every unit, they can become more engaged in science, learning, and school.
All of my students are considered high risk of dropping out due to having an alternative school placement due to discipline issues.
Our school has over 75% of our students on the free and reduced price lunch program (meaning they are at or under the poverty line). For many of these students school isn't a priority either due to necessity, like needing to work and help support their families, or choice, such as being disinterested. Many feel that there is no way for them to go to college so they don't even try.
My Project
I am requesting a few different biological charts in order to show students the world at a micro scale. These charts show examples from different biological kingdoms, cell division, and processes of reproduction. I am also requesting lab supplies in order to do labs on diffusion, osmosis, and surface area to volume ratios. This will allow me to add two more labs into units that could otherwise be abstract and dry.
With these materials my students will have a hands on experience in the science classroom.
This not only increases their mastery of the subject, but also increases their enjoyment of science and learning. By getting them reengaged in the classroom, we can keep from missing out on future innovators and leaders.
