This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
C.S. Lewis said, "the task of the modern educator is not to cut down jungles, but to irrigate deserts." Technology is the desert I want to irrigate. There are many engaging resources on the internet that can be used to make students excited to learn, but only if they have easy access to it.
My 183 students in my English Language Arts class are currently in 10th grade, are mostly Hispanic, and qualify for free-and-reduced lunches.
They adore the technology they do have (what high-schooler isn't attached to their phone?). They are great kids who make me laugh quite often (and some create funny informational videos I wish I could show you, but that would embarrass them). They work really well collaboratively, but their access to technology is rather limited.
Our school is a fundamental school with a focus on college and career readiness for our approximately 2500 students. Our mission is "to maintain a community that provides a challenging and supportive environment which empowers students to develop the skills and strategies necessary for post-secondary success."
My Project
I'm hoping that these 8 chromebooks will be the first stepping stones in creating a classroom of blended-learning (to put it simply, incorporating more and more technology IN the classroom and replacing handouts or 'worksheets' with online forms). I hope to use polling sites like Socrative more often in class, submit online assignments through Google Drive, use collections in Gooru to give some students autonomy in their learning, and teach them how to correctly and effectively word process while learning the proper etiquette for emails and online communication.
I will also be using the chromebooks to give my students skills practice for the their high school exit exam (CAHSEE).
I'm looking forward to being able to give the students more timely and effective feedback on their writing with the use of document sharing on Google Drive, so their writing skills grow, and they are ready to apply them in the global world.
These donations will help my students by allowing us to move forward and incorporate real world skills as they are used currently to our lessons and class activities.
They will become more engaged in their own learning, and hopefully, will become more self-motivated and independent thinkers.
These chromebooks will help me become a better teacher as I take and combine the best of reality and virtual reality to steer my students in a direction I know they are craving to go.
