Our Band program is for students in fourth through eighth grade. In fourth grade, students learn to play their instrument and perform in three concerts. In fifth grade, students may participate in solo/ensemble contest. In Jr. High, we perform in local parades, for ball games and in Band Contest.
Our students are from a small town (pop.
550) and the surrounding rural area. Most students come from a mix of working class and low income families.
Some parents are very active in their student's education and have the means to support their child's participation in Band.
Many however, are unable to provide the financial support needed to purchase an instrument and participate in Band.
My Project
We maintain an instrument inventory for those students who are unable to purchase an instrument of their own.
We are also starting a new program this year, in which all students will be able to join Band for a free trial period. During this four month trial, students will be able to use a school instrument.
It is our hope that after this trial period, more parents will invest in their child's participation in Band, and that those who are unable to do so will allow their student to continue to participate using a school instrument.
The instruments provided by this project will be added to the school inventory for student use.
The new instruments will go to the top students in our Jr. High Band (those that need a school Instrument).
The instruments they are currently using will be passed down to beginning and younger students.
The additional 3 instruments will allow more students to participate in Band, and allow us to provide advancing students with better quality instruments.
