Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Using yoga to offer my students the opportunity to explore different ways the body moves other than walking, running, and sitting in a desk. I teach dance in an high-needs elementary school. I see all grades from Kindergarten to 5th grade and have been establishing my dance/movement program for the past two years.

Through my dance teaching I naturally emphasize yogic techniques that will instill confidence, calm, flexibility, and stability in my students. From yoga postures, to breath work, to visualization and meditation I have seen a huge shift in my students behavior and attitude. In addition, they love it so much that I have a yoga club with dedicated 4th and 5th graders that meet once a week. With this said we are somewhat limited in all the postures we can explore without the assistance of yoga blocks.

Yoga blocks can act as "training wheels" that assist beginning students in stretches and balances. They are still able to reap the benefits but they have the confidence and the support to help them get there until they can take the "training wheels" off. Yoga blocks also help in restorative poses, alignment, and are great for educational games that appeal to all my students that I see day to day.

These yoga blocks act as the building blocks for beginning students and students continuing their yoga practice. The benefits of yoga in my school community is exponential! I wish you could see the change and growth in my students because of this practice. Everyone needs a little extra stability to hold on to until they are strong enough to not need it. This extra support could be possible with only you!
