Do you remember your teacher or parent telling you to "go look it up"? My students need help spelling and unfortunately I can't be a human dictionary all day. We need tools to help my students become better, more independent spellers.
I teach 30 active, curious and creative third graders.
Third grade is a year of transitioning from learning to write to writing to tell what you have learned. With students at a variety of spelling abilities, these spelling tools would help students be able to find the answers they need and learn new spelling patterns in the process. With individual spelling dictionaries students can look up words as needed at their desks. The electronic spell checkers will help students when they are working on final drafts. The spell checkers are a great tool for any writer!
My Project
My students will greatly benefit from having a copy of a spelling dictionary in their desks. With such easy access to a compact easy to use spelling dictionary, my students will be able to look up spelling at any time of the day, during any subject. Using a dictionary is a skill that takes practice, but is beneficial for a lifetime. The best way to master the skill of looking words up, is to actually look words up and practice alphabetical order in the process. Don't you remember singing the abc's as you were trying to find a word in the dictionary? For additional spelling support, my students could use electronic spell checkers. These will allow students to quickly reference spelling, multiple meaning words and pronunciation of similar sounding words. These spelling tools will help my kids develop and bloom as writers and great spellers!
Giving my students the opportunity to look up spelling will improve their spelling in their writing throughout the day.
With individual copies of spelling dictionaries I will no longer need to be the human dictionary and the students will become more independent and accurate writers. Electronic spell checkers will help my students quickly access spelling when editing. Being able to listen to the words, will allow the students to choose the correct word and spelling of that word in their writing.
