An Indiana Winter is just around the corner which means snow, ice, and cold! The school day is long for a 5 year old, especially when they can't get outside to play and have FUN! We're hoping to bring the fun inside to our classroom!
My sweet kinders face many challenges in their day to day lives.
I work in a Title 1 school with an astounding 95% of students qualifying for free/reduced lunch. Their poverty level affects them in many ways, from their very basic needs not being met all the way to their feelings of self worth. For nearly all of my students, coming to school is the only time they feel safe and carefree as a child should feel. It is my hope that school becomes more for them than a safe place where they receive a certain 2 meals. I want it to be a place of wonder, fun, excitement, and learning. I want it to be the catalyst for change -- pushing these sweet little people to do amazing things. I believe it all starts in the Kindergarten classroom... in my classroom, with these very special students.
My Project
Kindergarten has changed a great deal over the years. Now, there are extremely rigorous standards to meet. Kinders leave their first year of school knowing how to read, add, and even subtract! I know my students are learning -- and learning a LOT! The items I have requested for my classroom will allow students to take a break and have fun. These items will give them a chance to unwind and work on forming friendships, confidence, creativity, and simple happiness! With Winter just around the corner, I have requested items that can be used for indoor recess that will keep the kids active. It's not enough to just pop in a video every day for recess, I wanted to give the kids a chance to explore and interact -- a chance to have real FUN, as 5 and 6 year olds deserve. They need at least 25 minutes in the day to let loose and enjoy. I know these materials will provide them with just that!
I want to thank you for considering a donation to these children.
While many of them come to school not having eaten since lunch the day before, not having their medical needs met, and not having bathed, they all come bright-eyed and bushy-tailed at the prospect of enjoying another school day. Thank you for providing them with something as simple as fun, which many (myself included) take for granted. Your consideration is appreciated beyond words!
