Students get excited to use technology in the classroom and they benefit greatly by using different electronic devices. To have my students be active participants in acquiring the technology was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.
My class and I were having a class discussion and we wanted to look deeper into the topic. Unfortunately we did not have access to any technology at the time so we decided that we would have to revisit the discussion on another day. One of my students (Ken) asked if there was any way that we could get more computers (technology) for the school. I did some research and found student led projects on Donors Choose. When I told the class that we could try and get more technology for the school they were very excited at the possibility that THEY would be the ones getting it for their classmates.
Academically, the students will continue to develop their 21st century skill sets. In their future, whether they attend college or move right into a career, they will be expected to have these skills and they will be expected to be proficient at these skills.
My students will need to work together to accomplish the goal of getting this project fully funded. They will also face some problems that they will have to work through to make sure it gets funded. Any situations that come up as they are hoping to accomplish this goal will help them in their future.
In Their Own Words
Our goal is get to more Chromebooks for our school. We are trying to get 30 Chromebooks along with a cart to store and charge them in. Getting these will help all of the students in our school and it will also help all of the teachers in our school.
My classmates and I will put together all of the information we need to do this project. We did the research on which chrome books we wanted and which cart would be best. We will also help spread the word that this project is available to people.
We know that getting a lot of computers for a school is a hard thing. Computers cost a lot of money and schools have to spend money on other things besides computers. But if we can get these computers it would be a great thing for the whole school.
