"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." This quote attributed to Benjamin Franklin illustrates the need for students to be engaged and involved in what we want them to learn. The materials that I am requesting will help in the quest for student involvement.
My students are a group of students specifically enrolled in a class to prepare them for college.
The program is called Advancement Via Individual Determination or AVID. It is for students who are currently in the academic middle and need some extra help to make it to college. Many of them will be first generation college students. Many come from low income families. AVID students are students who are motivated to improve themselves as students.
I teach at a diverse urban middle school in Wisconsin. Sixteen percent of my students qualify for special education services and 40% of my students are economically disadvantaged. Twenty-two percent of my students are English Language Learners.
My Project
The materials that your donations would provide would help my students take ownership in their learning. One of the components of AVID is Tutorials which are student-led inquiry sessions. The students lead each other through discovering answers to questions they have from their classes. They will use the various dry erase and chalk board accessories in these inquiry sessions as well as in other AVID lessons to become the leaders of their own education.
We will use the other materials (the clipboards, paper, etc.) in other AVID lessons where the students will be responsible for teaching each other. They will learn that it is not always the teacher who is responsible for teaching them. They will learn that they are able to rely on each other to gain new understanding!
Your generous donations will be used by my students to learn from each other.
They will be able to present their inquiries to each other and work with each other to answer questions and present their learning to the class.
