Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember how you felt the first time you created something of your own? My students with disabilities deserve to have that same experience. An arts-based approach to instruction will provide support for student social, literacy, science, language, art, math, muscle, and problem-solving needs.
I teach a Special Day Middle School class in a large urban area in California.
Our school is identified as school-wide Title I, as 89% of our 1400 students are low-income and qualify for free snack and lunch. The students in my classroom have mild to moderate intellectual disabilities, including Down Syndrome, Autism, developmental delays, orthopedic impairments, and other health impairments. Two of my students have been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, and are confined to wheelchairs. I also teach several students with visual impairments, including some that are legally blind.
My students have extremely positive attitudes, and are always super excited to learn new things. Although my students are faced with these disabilities, they deserve an equal chance to receive an education. The art supplies that I am requesting will help all of my students to learn more efficiently, while developing social, literacy, science, language, art, mathematical, muscle, and problem-solving skills.
My Project
My students with disabilities will benefit from these art supplies in so many ways. Safe, simple and incredibly easy to use, the Safe and Simple Die-Cut Machine, Dies, and Die Storage Unit from Lakeshore are perfect for our classroom! The sturdy, portable machine easily cuts through everything from cardstock and felt to poster board, and has rubber tips on bottom to keep it securely in place! These classroom art supplies will provide my students with disabilities with new and stimulating modalities of learning. Children in Special Education profoundly benefit from participating in artistic project-based learning activities.
Art can motivate and stimulate children with special needs and improve their cognitive and academic development. Integrating art activities into my instruction will also promote social interaction, inclusion and self-confidence. These art supplies offer my students the chance to make their own designs, and the satisfaction of creating original works of art.
These art supplies will offer my students a whole new world of resources and accessibility.
Not only will the die-cuts make lesson materials more visible in all subject areas, it will also save countless time. The time that I spend preparing project materials for my students will be saved. This will allow for endless possibilities for learning and creativity. Students with disabilities are capable of so much, but need the tools and resources to help them to access the subject matter effectively.
