Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students enjoying learning regular academic classes but they have a deep passion for the art of fashion. Everyday they count down the hours until it is time for their "Become A Designer" class. They give me some ideas to incorporate in my lesson plans! That is how excited they get.
The majority of my students range from the ages 11-14.
Our school community consists of minority children (Hispanic & African American) that come from broken homes and/or low working class families. Being in school is usually the place they want to be because we give them something to strive for. We provide all kinds of enrichment programs that allow them to dispose of their talents & learn new things. At the end of every year we reflect and see how we have broken many students out of their shells and how they have gained yet another interest that will encourage them to stay productive and positive.
My Project
The students will use the materials I requested in many different ways. Having colored sharpies, fabric markers, colored pencils & all kinds of colored paper will allow students to first display their own artistic vision of what fashion is. Being able to use the materials like the "Coco Chanel" book & the "Project Runway Tapefitti" (which brings a mannequin & ready to wear designs) set requested, the students will have a better understanding of how to approach their ideas hands-on given the materials available, based upon the assigned topic of that week. The "Fashion Angels Project Runway Fashion Design Sketch Portfolio" Set is an ideal guide for the younger students to be encouraged to attempt to learn how to sketch & design with the help of the stencils & templates that come along with it. Then "Travel Fashion Light Box"; will be very helpful for those students that already have drawing skills & will have the opportunity to enhance them by using more detailed & descriptive sketches.
My project will make a difference because the students will NOT be limited to learning everything they can learn about fashion.
It all starts out with a piece of paper & pencil, but they will have all of the materials available that will teach them how to go about creating your own garments & styles in different perspectives, especially once learning about all of the fashion eras, designers, & trends. After learning, they can say my class paved the way to develop their passion for fashion & art.
