Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The art room has art on every wall including the ceilings and windows. There is always music and the sound of students' voices, movement and bustle of students making art. My favorite quote and class motto is "let art teach." A piece of paper and pencil and freedom to create is all students need.

I have 6th,7th,and 8th graders.

The 6th graders still have one foot in elementary school and need reassurance and support. The 8th grader have one foot in high school and they are eager to be high school students and mature yet they are in middle school one more year. The 7th graders are the middle children and getting the most out of middle school. These kids choose art as an elective and want to make art. There are a variety of levels of maturity and personalities in the art room but they have one thing in common; they like making art and being creative. They want to learn about different materials and techniques. I am glad to supply an enriching program. 6th graders are using clay and watercolors for the first time ever and it is exciting to see them discover art. 90% of the kids I teach are eligible for free and reduced lunches. Students wear uniforms, they are healthy, normal middle school students though they come from homes with little money. There are boys and girls in art.

My Project

I am requesting 15 packs of watercolor paper, 6 packages of mat frames and 25 packs of carbon paper to make portraits with The Memory Project for orphans. The students will use the watercolors and drafting paper to create portraits of orphans in Ghana. For many students, it is the first time using good watercolor paper and matting their paintings. It makes them feel like professionals. Once Memory Project sends me the portraits, the students will draw the orphans and add backgrounds about the country. We will go over details about Ghana before they start drawing the portraits. I will show the videos from The Memory Project website. They will create the drawings, then watercolors and mat the final painting. I will mail the portraits to The Memory Project and they will hand deliver the portraits to the students in Ghana. They will send back photos and a video of the delivery of the pictures. It is a very exciting and rewarding projects for students to do. It means so much to the students that get the portraits. They put the portraits up on the walls of their rooms. This projects follows the new art standards, creating and connecting.

This project makes a difference for my students who create a portrait for an orphan in another country.

They learn about the country and it makes a huge difference for the student in Ghana who gets the portrait that a person in the United States took the time to make for them. They are very thankful for this. My students learn about another country, learn about using art and learn compassion by making something for someone that has less than they have. It is the best, most rewarding project I do.
