"Any book that helps a child form a habit of reading, to make reading one of their deep and continuing needs, is good for them." (Maya Angelou)
I want my students to form the good habit of reading!
I teach Reading, Language Arts, and Social Studies to 6th grades students......who are enthusiastic, hardworking and motivated.
My school is an urban school with students from different cultures, backgrounds, neighborhoods and lifestyles. We have 550 students at our school with about 42% low income students, 23% English Language Learners, and 14% Special Education Students.
My Project
The books being requested will help build our classroom library and will be read during reader's workshop. It will provide a resource for our unit on series reading.
I am hoping to build a love of reading by getting them "hooked" into a series and then continuing on with the journey of that series. I believe that this can motivate those reluctant readers and challenge the advanced readers.
We also want to use some of the series for "mini-series" productions with children writing scripts that go with the books.
The workshops will involve reading, sharing, writing and acting out scenes, from their books. The students will read at their independent level and will choose what they want to read. When students can choose what they want to read, the more likely they are to continue reading. It is important to have different levels, genres and authors to choose from, to make it available for everyone.
Our Reading scores need to improve!
Study after study show that the more kids read, the higher their standardized test scores are in ALL academics. The variety, level and genres, will help each child find a series that will launch them into the workshop. Hopefully they will continue with the whole series. I think by getting kids started in a series they will want to read, read and read more. They will hopefully all find the joy of reading for their lifetime.
