Our class is a diverse class of 2nd through 5th grade living in a rural village in Alaska. Our village is the furthest northern town in the United States. We want a classroom pet to help teach our students responsibility and how to care for animals.
Our school is a rural school.
There are twenty kids in the class ranging from 2nd grade through 5th grade, which means a huge variety of personalities, abilities, and interests. The students are loving, and really looking forward to having a class pet next year! The students voted on what kind of pet to get, and they voted for a rabbit and a hedgehog. They haven't stopped talking about it since!
My Project
Having a class pet will help our students learn responsibility. They will be the ones taking care of the pets, feeding it, cleaning the cage, and making sure it has enough water. They will also learn how to properly treat animals. We will also do research projects on the class pets to learn more about how to take care of them and how they live in the wild. We need help getting necessary items like the cage, food, and toys to our rural village so that our new classmate can have a happy, safe home!
Most students have been exposed to dogs, many of which live outside all year round despite the cold weather.
Many of our students do not know how to care for an animal, and it is important for them to know how to safely handle and care for animals. We can't exactly go to Walmart (it's two plane flights away) and buy pet supplies, so they're relying on this to make their dream of a class pet come true!
