Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I want students to be able to come in to my classroom and have the opportunity to develop and maintain a long term learning project.
My school is a title 1 school in a suburb of Houston.
We have 550 7th and 8th graders that are mostly Hispanic. The students are very involved in school clubs and organizations as well as the community around the school and with the high school. My students especially are already very interested in the fish tank I personally have and are interested in having there own tank in my classroom when I presented the idea of an Aquatic Science Club.
My Project
I would like students to first put together their tanks while working in groups. Then they will continue the project by bringing in fish, feeding their fish, and cleaning and maintaining their tanks. From this project based learning project, the students will learn to care for aquatic life, qualitative investigation practices, measuring, principles of water, biotic/abiotic factors, and the nitrogen cycle.
I would hope that in being involved in this club, students will develop an interest in aquatic science and research.
Ultimately, I hope that this interest would also motivate them pursue college majors and careers in this field in the future.
The aquariums will also add to the learning environment in my regular classroom by providing a living example that I can also reference while teaching. This would also peek questions and interest from my student and allow for good classroom discussion.
