My students need to experience nature and not rely on movies, pictures from a book or the teacher telling them about what it looks, smells or feels like to be outside.

My Students

Do you remember playing in the woods? The majority of my students have never been for a walk in the woods or on a trail. I want to take my students on the Appalachian Trail to do a cross-curricular activity to correlate what they learn in the classroom to the real world.

My students come from a rural town that has seen most of the local work industry leave.

Even though most of the local jobs have left the area, these students are very motivated to do their best and they love their school and community. They are hard-working students that do the best they can with what they are given.

My Project

This trip will allow my students, who have very limited resources, see what they are learning in the classroom is out in the real world. Too many times, students do no realize why they are studying a certain subject while in the classroom. This trip will allow students an opportunity to be able to be surrounded by the subject, instead of seeing it in a book.

I believe this trip will encourage my students to understand the link between the classroom and the world around them.

This trip will also show students the local history that is right in their back yard. Students will do reflecting writing on what they see around them, as well as be able to learn about invasive tree species and how they affect the environment. Students will also be taking heart rates and will be wearing pedometers to show how hiking the trail can be physically active.
