My Students

In my classroom, I'm trying to get students more interested in reading and finding meaning in the things they read. Many of them have gone through most of their lives looking at reading as a useless chore; I want to try to change that.

Most of my students come from low-income families.

Many of them don't see a future for themselves beyond their current lifestyles. A lot of them are pessimistic and dejected because of what they see going on in the world around them. However, most of them still try, and most of them still cling to the hope of success. Our school is a magnet school which is trying to change things for our students and to provide them with the best educational opportunities we can.

My Project

"Animal Farm" is a book that is not overly long or challenging to read, yet it provides a depth of subject matter and content that belies its length. My students need a work of literature that can help them understand communication techniques and literary devices while remaining accessible to the entire class.

This project will make a difference because my students will be able to use this book as a mentor text to develop their own allegorical writings which address issues important to them.

Through this, they will demonstrate their understanding of the subject matter while deepening their connection to real-world issues.
