My Students

My students are very enthusiastic when I set up a crime scene for them to investigate. Most of the materials that I use are from Halloween stores and Home Depot!!! They often find it amusing, but I notice a different approach when I have more realistic and sophisticated material.

My students are 100% inner-city, 100% minority.

They are about 50% Hispanic, 45% African American and 5% Middle-Eastern. Our Hispanic population is greater than 40% English Language Learners. More than 90% of our students are entitled to free breakfast and lunch. They are a group of students who are striving to become well educated, yet have many difficult hurdles to overcome. Most attend classes everyday, yet have turmoil in their outside lives. Our school is based on research and technology. We strive to prepare as many students as possible for college and a strong future in the work force.

My Project

I am not sure how supplementing my lab supplies with the crime scene tape and crime bundle, will change a life, but I guarantee it will bring a smile to the kids faces. They will act more professional, and take their investigations more seriously. The students are great fun!! Having them act as investigators forces them to think and reason beyond their scope. Sometimes they amaze themselves!! I firmly believe that theyI will bring some of the skills that they learned in class with them in their future endeavors. I don't expect them to fingerprint their daughters' boyfriends, however they may decide to take a job as an insurance investigator, or a forensic accountant. Regardless of their career choice, the class will have an eternal impact on some level.

My kids are fun and funny.

They don't often have the recognition that students in more affluent districts have, such as debate, sports, theater. We don't have the resources. This class allows them to stand apart in the school.
