Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We have computers that are now 6 years old, all of which are out of warranty. At least one breaks down every day, due primarily to hardware failure. Students get frustrated with the mass amount of error pop-ups, random shut-offs, and general sluggishness of our computers. We need better computers!

Many people assume all students are masters of technology, but our students are not.

They do not know very basic computer tasks, such as how to turn a computer on and off. My students don't know how to change fonts, log in and out, and many come into my class not knowing what "right-click" is. It is simply heartbreaking. As for facts, over 90% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. About 70% of our students are Hispanic and about 30% are African-American. Many of our students will be the first in their families to attend college. Our high school is situated in a dangerous part of the city but has thrived over the years by focusing on instruction, safety, and the belief that every student can succeed. The school has been identified as a "Distinguished School" by the state and has improved its performance almost every year. However, the school is in desperate need new computers as the older ones are severely outdated and many of them have stopped functioning altogether.

My Project

We really need new computers! I simply cannot express this enough. Currently, there is no money in California for teachers, let alone school computers. Funding for education does not look to be improving any time soon. Our school has sacrificed upgrading our labs in order to keep our teachers. Without this grant, we will be unable to buy any new computers for several more years. Many of our students will only use our old computers at school because they can't afford a computer at home. Please give our students the chance to love learning about and using technology.

Our students need to learn how to use current, working technology. If they do not learn technology skills at school, many will never learn them, and will not be prepared for college or the job market. Giving students from poor socioeconomic backgrounds access to computers will help close the achievement gap and make the vision of a better tomorrow a reality for families who are losing faith in the American Dream.
