My students need clay to create cuneiform clay tablets like the scribes in Ancient Mesopotamia. They also need papyrus to learn how to make Egyptian hieroglyphics.
My students will be studying Ancient Civilizations this year and what would enhance their learning would be to put themselves in the place of a young boy or girl scribe as they learn to write on clay tablets and papyrus. If they were to experience the " real thing" real learning would take place.
My students are middle to low income highly diverse 6th graders with challenges in learning disabilities and language barriers.
BUT they are eager to learn and feel safe in our school ,where they are given a second chance to learn and grow. Having these extra learning tools would help them feel and experience it in a "real time learning "situation.
My school is a middle school with almost 1000 students in a fairly stable city. Parents and the community support education and our efforts to educate their children. They are delighted to see the learning that occurs on their visits to our school and anything we can do as teachers to make it more interesting and " out of the textbook" only helps enhance learning for these children.
My Project
I am asking for clay so that the students can make Ancient Mesopotamian clay tablets and papyrus paper to make Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics.
We do not have a lot of resources or time to do many activities that enhance their learning, but these two activities would make a big difference in their understanding of what life was like thousands of years ago and let them make that connection to the past that they need in order to comprehend life in the past.
We will conclude our study of Ancient Civilizations by doing these activities and then display them in the hallways for others to appreciate.
Art touches people in ways that reading does not. I hope to enhance their understanding by using their hands and their tactile senses.
I would really enjoy being able to bring to my classroom, an opportunity to do the art work from these civilizations, as a way to connect present to the past and for them to have a lasting memory of that learning experience.
I am not able to supply them with the materials for these projects and the school has no money for this type of thing either. I am asking for the supplies to enhance their learning in a meaningful and fun way that brings history to life for them.
