Reading one book is like eating one potato chip. One book is never enough! I want to give each of my students one book in hopes that it won't be enough!
My students live in a rural area that does not even have a free public library.
We also do not have any type of Parks and Recreation and live in a region where the summer temperatures are well above 100 degrees. It is tough to keep kids entertained all summer!
My students LOVE to read. I have found myself saying things like, "Put your book away so you can listen." It really seems so wrong to say that to any child!
My students are privileged to attend a school with high academic standards and have learned the importance of becoming great readers!
My Project
I would like to send each of my students home on the last day of third grade with a brand new book to read over the summer. I plan to make it lots of fun with a book auction! We have a classroom economy system which allows students to earn class money for great behavior and turning homework in on time. During the last quarter I would like them to be able to use this money to buy tickets. On the last day of school I want to surprise them with a table full of brand new books. There will be a cup next to each book and students will be able to put the tickets they earned in any cup they want. I will draw one winner for each book. I also give each child a summer reading challenge and offer an incentive to those who bring it back. At the end of the day, every one of my students will leave the third grade excited to read over the summer!
Too often, students leave for summer break and never think about their studies until the first day of the next school year.
I do everything in my power to show them that they can have fun this summer and still practice the important skills we have learned this year. Making sure that every student has a book to start with will make all of the difference.
