This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
In my history class, students are analyzing texts on a daily basis and looking for how everything that has happened in the past connects to what is going on in the present. By the end of the year I want students thinking like historians with access to quality grade appropriate texts.
My school is a PreK-8 charter in New Orleans, where 96% of kids qualify for free or reduced price lunch.
We are a STEM school, so our kids are fortunate to have access to amazing opportunities, like their own personal Chromebooks, which helps us teachers integrate technology into the classroom. We have made incredible academic gains over the last 5 years, when we first took over a failing school. Still, our kids have very real skill gaps, especially when it comes to reading and writing -- which is why I want to bring in trade books into my history class.
My Project
With these trade books, my students will be able to analyze text that is on their level and aligned with the content being taught. Having actual books in hands (instead of photocopies of a book) will increase the investment in the students, as well as help to maintain the information being taught.
My students are natural historians, but literacy gaps hold us back from truly reading and writing like historians.
These trade books that will be used in class will help to close that gap, and give my students more opportunities in the future.
