Aluminum Falcons to get New Bench Top Metal Lathe

My students need a Lathe.

My Students

Students on the Robotics Team are itching to make things out of raw materials, to take a big tube of aluminum and make an axle, or spindle, or customized bushing.

The Fitch Robotics Team attracts students from across our wide range of the socioeconomic spectrum.

They all have in common the drive to make. Our school includes kids of scientists and engineers, and well as the kids of military families (officers and enlisted). Nearly a quarter of our students come from families described as "under-served."

My Project

The school has a 40 year old, 2 ton behemoth of a metal lathe. This lathe has been the machining standard of industry for decades and can be used to make nearly anything. The trouble is, it is rather difficult to use as a teaching tool, and it is also totally, totally unmovable. This bench top lathe we are looking at, not only is it portable, but it is more appropriate for the size of the materials that are usually made for our competition robots. Furthermore, its smaller size, with fewer industrial-level settings, is much less complicated allowing for quicker learning. The smaller mass of moving parts is also much safer. Yet the general design is the same as the industrial giants, so the skill acquired is directly translatable.

From an intangible concept to a solid object.

This is what the Fitch Robotics Team has been doing for years. Our students want to learn how to make. The bench top lathe will improve the making abilities of our team, not only by doubling the number of metal lathes, but by more than doubling our ability to teach the machining skill to our young makers.
