My Students

Rising fuel prices cause growing concern! As prices rise, families have to reorganize their budgets often at the expense of other necessities. Studying alternative energies will provide students with insight to the problem and possibly to careers that could provide a solution to energy shortages.

My students are middle school students, grades 6-8.

They are a close knit bunch of kids who have gone to school together most of their young lives. We are seeing more new faces with several businesses that have moved into the surrounding areas. The other thing we are seeing is more students who are classified as economically disadvantage. We are currently rated moderately disadvantaged. We are a public school district. We saw serious cuts to education in our state last year. We are not seeing a resolution to school funding issues this year. The students ultimately are the ones who will suffer as there is only so much one can do with the budget given. My students are curious and love to learn via hands on methods. I did take a wind energy class and received teaching materials for wind energy. I do have a few teaching tools that can be used to demonstrate solar energy. I would like to give these eager minds an insight into fuel cells as well.

My Project

What I would like to do is incorporate the fuel cell car and experiment kit into a unit on alternative energies. I would use existing wind and solar energy materials that I have and add the fuel cell experiments into the mix. Targeting my 8th grade students, I would have the students work through stations on the different types of energy with the kits. I am requesting the "Catch the Wind, Harness the Sun" book as it gives additional ideas of projects that can be done. I would like to see one of the stations to be such that students can view the different projects in the book and select a project of choice to explore as a team. Of course, this may require my ear-marking which projects we have the supplies for. Students are very aware of the rising fuel prices, whether it's at the pump, or to heat their homes. These young minds are our future and being exposed to studies in alternative energies could lead a student or students to careers that could provide energy solutions.

I believe rounding out the alternative energy unit with the fuel cell kit and a chance to explore wind and solar energy areas of their own choosing will lead students to appreciate the possibilities.

There are a lot of sharp minds amongst our youth and it may be one of those minds that thinks "What if..." and assists with or finds a means of providing us with energy for the future.
