Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The stage (and really, the whole world!) awaits our budding third and fourth grade actors, who are poised for greatness following their Reader's Theater debuts earlier this year. However, they could use some inspiration from the pros...and greater integration of the arts into our ELA curriculum.
The majority of our third and fourth grade students are English language learners living in a high poverty area of our city.
Many families joined our charter school to give their children access to a higher quality education, and we have worked diligently to bring them to - and above - grade level expectations when it comes to reading, writing, and speaking in English. Critical to this journey has been nurturing their love and excitement for learning, which we found many did not have before they joined our school. To observe this transformation firsthand has been inspirational!
My Project
Through First Stage Milwaukee's Theater in Education program, our students will gain access to live performances and classroom instruction that engages them in a deeper appreciation of the arts - as well as helps them continue to build critical literacy skills. The program includes admission to one live performance of "Luchadora" set in Milwaukee (a play that has strong ties to our hometown and the Mexican heritage many of our students share), as well as pre- and post-performance classroom instruction that is aligned to grade-level standards and taught through drama-based activities. Students have a chance to engage with the content in a more expressive, creative way than they might otherwise.
For many of our students, attending a play is something they haven't actually experienced themselves - and we'd love to give them the exposure to a live performance, especially one that is so closely tied to their own heritage and will be meaningful to them.
We want them to understand that literacy extends beyond reading and writing, or the classroom/home. There are so many ways to use and enjoy what we're learning together, and one of them is through dramatic arts!
