Dr. Suess once said...And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and 3/4 % guaranteed.) Kids, you'll move mountains!
I strive to make my students feel like they can accomplish anything and even when they feel overwhelmed the promise that they will eventually understand.
I have many students in and out of my classroom each day.
I am a Title I teacher so I take small groups of struggling learners. I have up to 50 students enter my room each day. Many of my students just need a little extra instruction to understand skills needed to be successful in the classroom. It may be one topic in math or a wider need such as phonemic awareness. Some of my students just need to talk through what they are reading to build comprehension. Many of my students also have additional difficulties that are not necessarily related to academics but hinders their learning. I have many students that have ADHD, some with autism, and many with family issues. All of these need to be taken into consideration when helping them reach grade level.
My Project
I am in need of a large carpet for group time that allows me to give each child personal space . During the course of my day I have at least 8 small groups. Each day my groups have a mini lesson where we all sit on the floor and study the same skill. After that we move to the tables and work on items that are specific to the individual student's needs. The time we spend as a group on a specific skill is a very important time of the lesson. It gets the same message to all the students and sets the purpose of the daily lesson. It allows the students to learn from each other through listening to each individual's thoughts.
Many of my students struggle to sit and listen because of certain issues. I have found if I give the students a specific spot to stay and explain that each child has their own personal space, it is very successful. A visual spot is ideal. This new carpet will allow me to do that.
I do know this will work for my students.
I currently have little play mats that fit together like a puzzle. When they were new it worked wonderfully but now with age they are falling apart and the kiddos are now playing with them. So that is why I need something that is more durable. Students truly respond to having their own personal space and if I can give them a visual of that it allows them to learn and stay focused much more effectively.
