Ah-choo! Tissues, Wipes, Sanitizer, Oh My! PreK/K Special Ed
My students need basic health supplies to begin the new school year: facial tissue, hand sanitizer, disinfecting surface wipes and spray, paper towels, and diaper supplies.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We all know how miserable it is to be sick and none of us want that for ourselves or for our kids, especially my vulnerable special needs preK/K students. The supplies we are requesting will help cut down on the spread of germs in our classroom to keep us healthy and able to attend school.
My special needs preschool and kindergarten-aged students have been identified as having developmental delays.
Planning ahead for this fall, my classroom can include students with a variety of impairments, including down syndrome, autism, intellectual disability, visual, hearing, or orthopedic impairments, specific learning disability, and more. They attend a public elementary school and range in age from 2-6 years old. My students are so eager to learn and are excited about coming to school. I want to keep them healthy so they can keep learning!
Our Title One school is located in a high-poverty area and 77.6% of our students are identified as economically disadvantaged. Our city and surrounding area are home to several major US military installations, as well as a world-class shipyard that is the sole ship builder of the US Navy's air craft carriers. Our school falls within sight of the largest gantry crane in the Western Hemisphere, located right across the street!
My Project
Little colds and sniffles seem to affect them so easily and often there are other complications to illness due to their special needs. I'm asking for the basics in this project. Most of my students are from homes that struggle with providing just the necessities. I ask parents at the beginning of each school to supply what they are able on our supply list, but with many families out of work and barely able to put food on the table, it seems unreasonable to expect that they could afford to supply our classroom with tissues, hand sanitizer, hand or surface wipes, and paper towels. However, these supplies are still needed badly in our classroom. Often I have to purchase them myself, because I need to stay healthy, too, for the sake of my students. Extra diapers and wipes in the classroom will also be very useful for times when parents just aren't able to supply them due to financial need.
Every time a child is sick, they miss days that they need to be present in school in order to learn.
For my students with underlying health conditions, each illness puts them at risk for a hospital visit and serious health complications. Please help me keep our classroom clean and free of germs that could adversely affect my student's health. We will be so appreciative! Thank you for helping us improve attendance and stay healthy so all of my students can learn!
