Agriculture: Food...And Fuel For The Future?

My students need bio-fuels laboratory kits and lab supplies.

My Students

One of the greatest challenges we face today is the issue of fuels. Fuels for our cars, homes and jobs are rising in price everyday. One of the most talked about options to normal fuels is biofuels. These lab kits will allow students to investigate, firsthand, how biofuels are made and work.

We are a public high school located in the central part of South Carolina.

Our school has approximately 1,400 students that come from multiple communities and areas spread across our entire county. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds: rural and urban, families that have lived here for 5 generations and military families that have been here for 5 months, different races and ethnicities, etc. My class is in agricultural and environmental science. Many of my students have never seen a farm or an agricultural operation, much less ever thought about how the plants, animals, and even soil impacts their everyday lives. My students are good kids. They like to learn by doing instead of just sitting in a classroom. They enjoy going outside and touching and doing. A lot of times they are written off as problems or failures, but when put in a situation to do well they will many times go above and beyond to learn as much as they can.

My Project

Every day we hear the news that gas prices are rising and if we do not slow our consumption or find a new form of energy, we may all soon be walking. One of the most hotly debated and widely known alternative energy sources discussed is biofuels, or fuels that come from a living source. The materials requested include two kits on biofuels, one of which shows how animal waste (manure) can be used to create gas that can then be used for electricity production, and the other will allow students to actually create a small batch of biodiesel. The other materials requested are a laboratory scale and additional weights for students to be able to effectively conduct labs, and laboratory aprons for students' safety during labs.

We all know that gas prices are high.

We hear it on the radio, TV, and Internet nearly 24/7. Hopefully, through these kits and the labs and demonstrations our students can experience, we might inspire the person who goes on to find the next great fuel source, or at the very least give our students a whole new appreciation for where their energy comes from.
