We need the Nintendo Wii, fitness games such as Zumba and Just Dance, and nutritional books such as 'Nutrition Facts for Kids' to keep them fit and healthy!
My students are joining forces to face their adversity and propose to you an amazing initiative to better their lives! We are a Title 1, District 75, specialized special education school in the South Bronx. Many students are growing up in poverty with multiple disabilities, but with excitement to learn.
For students with intellectual and multiple disabilities, writing can be a daunting task. If it is not purposeful, it often loses its meaning. If it is not taught explicitly, the skills are often not retained. Having a student-powered project here is an incredible way to show my students that writing is powerful and can be used to make a positive change and contribution to their world.
Through the essay writing and project development, my students will learn valuable leadership, persuasive essay writing, and collaborative partnership skills that will help them in future vocational settings. With the health and fitness materials for this project support my students will learn crucial self-advocacy, hygiene, nutritional information, and fitness information that can enhance their lives, and the lives of their families around them. This is a meaningful forum for my students to advocate for themselves and their peers and they will learn so much from it.
In Their Own Words
"This year my teacher started a hygiene routine for us to follow each morning. It was funded by amazing donors that supported our class and this website. Being able to use those materials helped us to start a conversation about healthy living and how we can make ourselves better. A health and fitness club at our school will help us to be healthy and strong and to workout. Everyone in our school needs to be healthy and strong.
A lot of the students in our school buy their food through food stamps and do not always buy the healthiest choices. We need to have a program that teaches students all about eating healthy and making good choices. There are many students in our school in wheelchairs who cannot exercise as much as other students. This program will teach those students some helpful exercises that they can do, and how important it is to eat healthy everyday so they can live healthier. We do not want our disabilities to keep us from living a healthy life.
Our goal is to make sure that everyone in the school has a healthy weight. We learned a lot in science about how being overweight can cause you to have other diseases. We want to make sure we stay in shape so we don't get them when we are older. Also, students who have disabilities like me usually have a lot of medical problems and not having a healthy weight can make those problems worse. We want to make sure everyone is healthy enough to work a job when they graduate and maybe become famous!"
