My Students

Accessibility is probably the most important thing for people with disabilities. Children especially crave that accessibility; the ability to move around in their least restrictive environment with their peers.

Our school is a regional, junior high, barrier free school.

We have been welcoming an increasing number of students with varying disabilities including orthopedic impairments, neurological impairments, autism, learning disabilities and others. These children are now afforded the opportunity to learn with their peers, despite their challenges. Occupational therapy supports them in their challenges to succeed in this academic setting. Therapy is a fun place for them. A place where they can move around, interact with others that share their struggles, and make progress.

My Project

A wonderful platform therapy swing has been generously donated to our school. We are currently asking for a swing frame so that the children could have access to this excellent mode of therapy. In addition, we desperately need a mat table, (which is a raised mat that children with (or without) physical disabilities can transfer to and from easily, in order to participate in therapy activities). Sitting in a chair all day can be tiresome and transferring to the floor, at times, can be difficult for staff and students and sometimes painful. This mat table and swing frame can provide the accessibility needed so that children can come out of their chairs, be mobile, and participate in therapeutic activities to help increase their academic and social success in school. In addition, having a mat table will foster independence, as many of the children will be able to transfer to and from the table by themselves with little to no assistance.

The access to a therapeutic swing and mat table provides the students with a "leg up" in their therapeutic process.

If you donate to this project we will be able to afford the children in our school the opportunity to move around and receive therapy more easily. Movement is the precursor to brain development and learning. Come, move with us to make this project happen.
