This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever tried counting to eleven on your fingers? It's hard for a pre-k student to grasp the concept of counting along with other math skills. What is the difference between a number and a letter? Not much to a pre-k student. You might as well be speaking a foreign language.
Many of my students come from homes where the parents place a high value on education, but they have not had the money to pursue higher education.
Over 80% of my students are on the free lunch program. Our school even gives every child a free breakfast to start the day off right. We care enough to feed the child's body, and I care enough to want nourish their minds with the richest materials I can to motivate them to learn.
My Project
I want two Samsung tablets for the kids to use as a center with free apps I plan on downloading. Technology skills are very important for my kids to have as they will be expected to utilize tablets in kindergarten and higher grades as portfolio devices. I am new to teaching, so I do not have very many materials for any subject area, especially math and language arts. My students need a variety of counters to help them with counting, sorting, and patterns. These skills are essential to their later development in math addition and subtraction. For language arts acquisition, I have included phonemic awareness (letter sounds), alphabet materials, and journals. These are the basic skills that we teach in pre-k for language arts. The journal is an introduction to printing letters. I have also included one item to assist with the kids with understanding sound. In summation, I believe that these materials will give my kids a firm academic foundation for kindergarten to build upon next year.
Now, have you figured out how to count to eleven using just your fingers?
You do it in pairs of students and they count starting on their friend's fingers then go to their own. Not the best solution to a math problem. Best solution is your donation to help me provide math manipulatives that don't wiggle as much as fingers do. Thank you for your support of my class.
