My Students

My classroom of English Language Learners have stories to tell. What we lack are the creative materials and supplies to let these young imaginations soar. Our school provides few of these materials and our families cannot afford them.

My students come from diverse language and cultural backgrounds.

Our school is located in an urban area in Wisconsin. Many of my students come from low-income backgrounds. These kids are energetic, hardworking, and are full of stories and dreams. When given a small journal, they will happily write their hopes, dreams, and challenges. Once they have a story, they also love creating illustrations to make the writing come alive.

My Project

My students need writing tools and supplies, including colored pencils, books, and folders, to help them do the work real writers do. These writing resources will help my students make their unique voices come alive on the page. Students will use these writing station tools, such as the pens and tape, to be able to work independently, have ownership of the classroom, and learn to be problem solvers in their writing projects. The students will use the books to learn writing strategies from real writers. The materials, such as cardstock, markers, pens, and colored pencils, will help my students be creative and make vibrant writing projects. Using the folders and labels, we will create our own dictionaries and thesauruses to help my language learners strengthen their writing.

My students have rich lives and a lot to say.

Our writing workshop helps them understand the power of words and is an outlet for their creativity. These writing materials will help my students learn to express and share their ideas, as well as develop their unique voices. My students are inspired to write by their imaginations and events in their own lives. They are anxious to use these materials to record them.
