This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are all living beautiful stories. This could be the year they get to tell them.
My students are creative and insightful--a joy to teach.
Our school is an arts magnet school so many of them are already extremely interested in visual arts. Most of our students receive free and reduced lunch; many don't have access to a digital camera at home. I know they're going to love experimenting with photography at school.
My Project
I think that literacy is a key to life. If you can read and write, you can do anything. This year we're learning literacy through photography. We're making pinhole cameras and taking photographs with disposable cameras. We'll be reading books about photography and extending the impact of our photos through writing. Students will be taking photographs with the goal of capturing themselves, their families, their neighborhoods, and their dreams.
At the heart of this project is the belief that my students' perspectives matter deeply.
This photography unit is a chance for them to be authors. The images they will produce are a glimpse into how they see their world. Their stories are beautiful. Please help us tell them.
