Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The Library at Leon Springs Elementary is a vibrant, busy place, with students coming in and out throughout the day to check out books, read, take AR tests, work on class work, engage in research, attend story times and lessons, and use technology for a variety of reasons.
I am convinced that we have the best students in the world here at LSE (but I might be a little biased).
They are curious and hardworking. The staff at our school has worked diligently to create a real feeling of family here, and that is readily seen in the actions and attitudes of our students. They are all working to be leaders in something. They are cultivators of kindness and engineers of innovation. They are thirsty for knowledge and deserve all the tools we can provide to help them get it.
My Project
Students who come to the library will be using the iPads for many different things. We will use them for research to learn about our world. We will use them to make technology projects to present our learning. We will use them to read ebooks and engage with other literacy apps. We will use them to scan QR codes when we have a Museum, Poetry Stations, and Science Stations. We will use them to engage with augmented reality with apps such as Aurasma. Last fall, we were fortunate enough to receive 4 iPads from generous donations on this site and they are being used constantly. It has become apparent that more are needed to meet the demand and that a laptop is needed to sync them all together and manage the technology effectively.
In a perfect world with perfect public school funding, each student would have access one-to-one with a device such as an iPad.
Although that's not a reality at the moment, the more technology we can provide, the better. The mobility and flexibility of the iPads makes planning and executing learning opportunities easier and more innovative. Having these in the library impacts our entire school population.
