"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." -- Benjamin Franklin
A student's classroom is their home away from home.
As a teacher, creating a learning community where students feel safe and loved is very important. Students need to have a place to gather for whole-group instruction, discussion, reading, etc. A classroom community rug would give them a chance to interact away from their desks.
My students are a part of a public elementary school in urban Oklahoma. My students are from a very low socioeconomic background and live in a high poverty community. Many students have incarcerated or uneducated parents. This being said, our school is 100% free and reduced lunch. Many struggle to even make it to school each day.
My Project
Students would benefit from the classroom rug in a variety of ways:
- Whole group reading instruction
- Reading with a Partner
- Math Centers
- Community Circle Sharing
- Whole group Instruction
- Small group Centers
This past year I had to make three tape lines where my students would sit. The tape was constantly being torn and destroyed. Students were crowded and fighting over spots. A community learning rug would create a spot for each student to have their own individual space. When it is time to come to the floor students would know exactly where to go. This would save time creating more time for learning.
This community learning rug can be used for my entire teaching career and many students will benefit from the rug in the classroom.
The rug is a unique piece of classroom furniture that has many functions.
