A Second Upfront Look At Our World

My students need 35 subscriptions (a classroom set) to Upfront, a news magazine for teens created by the New York Times.

My Students

In our rural area, my students need to make stronger connections between our curriculum and what is going on in the world around them. Upfront, a news magazine for teens by the New York Times, will engage my tenth graders in current events. They will read the articles and respond in writing.

I have approximately 130 students each year in a high poverty area.

Many have never traveled outside of our rural area. Also, many come from families who do not have magazine or newspaper subscriptions delivered to their home. In addition, many do not have Internet access at home, so they don't read online news. These students are bright and inquisitive, and I do my best to help them make connections to the world around them through our in-class readings and discussions. This year thanks to generous donations through Donors Choose, my students used Upfront magazines to read in class. They each got to choose which articles to read and then responded by writing personal responses and persuasive essays. The magazines were a huge success. I recently surveyed the students to find out if we should request new subscriptions for next year, and the answer was a resounding YES.

My Project

Having a classroom set (35copies) of Upfront magazines will help me to provide reading to my students about current events. Oftentimes I print online news articles; however, reading the articles in a magazine and having glossy, color photographs to go along with the articles will further engage the students. I have them write a one-page response each week to a current news article, so this will provide the necessary reading material for them. The magazine also includes graphs, charts, maps, teen essays, debate topics, political cartoons, etc., to help students improve their literacy skills. After my students read the magazines, the issues are passed along to other teachers so that more students can use them.

This project is very important for improving the literacy of my students.

The news magazine is a tool that could help boost the students' test performances and help them prepare for college-level reading. The magazine includes 14 issues a year and is filled with in-depth national and world news designed to get teenagers reading, talking, and thinking about the world around them.
