My Students

Give me Liberty or Give me Death! We spend fifth grade learning about exciting places and events like Jamestown, Yorktown, Washington DC, and Plymouth, although most of my students have never been more than 50 miles away from our town!

My fifth graders are some of the most motivated and committed students I have ever seen.

Almost all of my students are English Language Learners, which means they need to work twice as hard as native English speakers in order to be just as good! This year our grade is going on our first ever big field trip, and we have a lot of money to raise! We want to visit Yorktown, Williamsburg, and Jamestown to visit and experience some historic sites fundamental in forming our nation. This will help our students connect the places we read about with the actual places We have formed a Young Entrepreneurs club and our students jumped at the opportunity to fundraise for the trip. The Young Entrepreneurs have thrown a successful movie night, sold food and drinks at Faculty and PTA meetings, and have two more big fundraisers in the works.

My Project

The addition of a popcorn popper would dramatically increase our sales at Movie Nights, PTA meetings, and faculty meetings. Advertising for and selling popcorn to students would teach our students valuable entrepreneurial skills and give them ownership of the fundraising for this trip. On top of everything else the popcorn popper would help us go on our trip to Virginia!

My students spend all their days in our small town without ever leaving.

They have very little conception of the outside world. We need our students to see, experience, and understand what life was like in the 17th and 18th century. Reading books in a schoolroom can take you many wonderful places, but nothing compares to visiting actual historic sites where students can see, smell, taste, and touch living history.
