A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

My students need a camera, camera case, and memory card to take pictures from real life experiences (e.g. field trips) to help express themselves orally & through written expression.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"A picture is worth a thousand words." Through the use of pictures/photos we hope to help use real life experiences to inspire children to learn. We hope through the use of pictures/photos we can give children the vocabulary needed to write and tell detailed stories.

I currently teach in a full-inclusion classroom.

I have 19 students. Several students have special needs and are ELL. One special needs student is autistic and she is not always able to express herself verbally. In the past, I have borrowed a camera to take pictures of my class when we went on field trips. Usually after going on a field trip the children are very excited about what has just happened and they have a lot to write about during Writer's Workshop. Some of my special needs & ELL students do not fully understand what I am asking them to do when I give verbal directions. However, when I pair verbal directions with photos from real life experiences they can then relate and participate in the task at hand. It has been very helpful to be able to show these students pictures on a camera and have them choose their favorite part simply by pointing to the picture. I can then help give these students the vocabulary needed to write a sentence using the pictures.

My Project

Imagine being in a foreign country and someone comes over to you and begins to speak. You see the person's mouth moving but do not know what the person is saying. You feel frustrated. Now, imagine being in a foreign country and someone comes over to you and begins to speak. This person then shows you a picture and you begin to smile. Through the picture you can begin to relate to what the person was trying to tell you. Well, I hope that with a camera and a few necessities that I can bring more smiles and photos/pictures into my kindergarten classroom.

Having a camera & taking photos would come in handy for all subjects.

For example, in our math curriculum we relate concepts we teach to the real world. We look for patterns all around the community. With a camera, we could take pictures of patterns the children find. We can use these photos to help children who are not able to express themselves identify what types of patterns they found. There is a quote that says, "a picture is worth a thousand words," well in this case it truly might be.
