A Peek Into Science (Part One)

My students need Math and Science Journals and a current microscope and post-it flags for making exciting scientific revelations.

My Students

Do you remember your first view into a microscope? Seeing the magic that makes up the world beyond the naked eye?

My 6th grade students are full of curiosity.

I currently teach 78 students. Our school is a middle school located in southern California. We are a Math, Science and Technology Magnet. However, because of severe budget cuts, we are not supplied with the basic materials, much less new technology that should be available to a Science, Technology magnet.

My Project

We need new microscopes! Most microscopes available for our students to use are old and broken. The technology today uses LED lighting so the slides do not heat up. They have rechargeable batteries and are cordless so there is no potential for students to trip over cords. These student microscopes will help us see the world more clearly. We are also in need of new journals to record our observations. Our Math and Science journals are used every day (2 per student). These bound paper books with graph paper inside help keep all our information in one place. Our journals are now bursting with information from our first semester. New journals are needed to record our observations and investigations for the coming semester. The Post-it flags we use allow the students to quickly refer back to important formulas.

New technology is a precious commodity at most schools.

Even one new microscope can be shared among the students for this year and years to come. The journals will provide the students with a compact source of science and math information they have learned over the year and can refer to in the future.
