Years from now, what will you remember about your high school career? Will you remember the worksheets or required homework? Or will you remember the sheep brain, cow eye, or pig kidney you were able to explore and dissect? Only through inquiry can we discover the truth and magic of science.
My students are juniors and seniors with a variety of interests.
Some plan on furthering their education at a 4-year college while others are planning on attending a vocational school. Whatever their plans after high school, NHS strives to provide the highest education possible. We are a small rural school of about 60 students in western Colorado. The area has been economically depressed since the mining business, particularly uranium, ended in the 1970's. Even through the challenging times and struggles with funding, our school remains full of energetic students striving to learn and increase their knowledge. Teachers put forth extra hours, late nights and many weekends to create and improve the education that each student receives and deserves. One way to do this is through inquiry-based teaching which involves hands-on labs and field trips. This project is just the first step to providing my anatomy students with an experience worth being remembered.
My Project
Our school was able to purchase a classroom set of cow eyeballs, sheep brain and heart and pig kidneys for dissection during the school year. These supplies will be used for hands-on exploration and seeing the details of certain organs that are hard to appreciate and understand on paper. Towards the end of the school year, students will be able to put everything they have learned into a final cat dissection. I am requesting 5 preserved cat specimens for my class. The cat dissection will better prepare our students for their final field trip to a cadaver lab in Denver.
My hope is that our students will receive a top grade education and be competitive against other high school students.
NHS administration and teachers are putting forth their full effort to give these students every opportunity they deserve. The students may not remember every little thing about high school but we can try and give them experiences, skills and memories that will better prepare them to become an educated person, informed citizen and happy individual.
