it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I'm excited that my students want to make a change for the better! They acknowledge that they do not read enough, but they are willing to remedy this issue if they were granted a brand new library. Zaniya, Denise, Angel and Janette think that a new library would be very beneficial to their class!
I asked my students if any of them were interested in making a student-led project, and the aforementioned quartet jumped at the idea. I posed the following question to them: "How can we make our library better?" My students didn't just want to order a few new books. They thought it was necessary to do a total renovation of our old, dated library. I had to agree with them. That is how this project idea was born...
One academic skill that will help my students become college and career ready is reading fluently. The ultimate goal of reading is to understand what is being read, yet some children struggle with reading comprehension. Reading interesting books at their reading level will help my students become fluent readers. A new library would help make this happen! Furthermore, the social-emotional skill of teamwork is being developed here, as the students are working together to make a positive change to their environment. Also, they will need to work together to sort out those books using the cubby trays so as to form an organized library.
In Their Own Words
We just want to have new books! Almost all of our books are old and worn. They don't really interest us. It's hard to go to the local library after school, as we have homework and family responsibilities. Our goal is to have brand new books so that we can read to succeed at school and at home. Oh, one more thing: the books have to be organized. So we also need bookcases and cubby trays to keep our new books neat and orderly!
With Mr. Mehmedovic's help, we all picked out the books that would bring us hours of joy and pleasure. Some of us picked graphic novels. A lot of us like fantasy books, so we were sure to get many of those. Selecting books for a new library was a fun and worthwhile process. If we were to get the new books, we promise to sort them out by genre during our lunch period!
Many of our classmates don't read enough. Some do not read at all when they're at home! This is a huge problem, as we can only become better readers if we read often. Mr. Mehmedovic says we need to read each and every day for at least 30 minutes. We told him that we'd read more if only we had books that interest us. Your donation would get us reading again and on the path to success!
