A Multi-Cultural Approach to Studying the Civil War

My students need 24 multicultural books and 2 simulations about the Civil War that include the stories of women, African Americans and minorities.

My Students

Bruce Catton, Civil War historian, said, "It was the greatest and most moving chapter in American history, a blending of meanness and greatness, an ending and a beginning. It came out of what men were, but it did not go as men planned". My students need to learn the whole story of the Civil War.

I work with 29 fifth grade students who are trying to learn how to be successful.

They are handicapped because our school lacks resources to help them. We are not a Title 1 school but 19 of my students are eligible for Free and Reduced breakfast and lunch. These students often do not have money for simple school supplies like paper and pencils. Our classroom lacks up to date materials on the American Civil War. My classroom is multicultural and diverse. Six of my students are in an English Language Learner program, seven are in resource and special education, and three are in Indian Education support classes. They all want to learn but it is not easy. They need materials at different reading levels and materials that are accurate and relevant to them.

My Project

It is sad but my students are handicapped by their poor academic skills and a lack of social studies materials on their reading level. I want to help develop their reading and writing skills. I also want to help them become more self-reliant. I plan to use the books in this project to help my students learn about the American Civil War and the contributions of many people who helped create and maintain this nation. I need more inclusive and up-to-date materials. We have nothing that my students can read. Our classroom library is inadequate and not culturally relevant. I need materials that will appeal and also teach my students about the history of the United States. I plan to develop a new unit on the American Civil War with these materials.

My school does not have many resources for my students.

I need a creative way to improve their reading and writing skills while helping them learn about the American Civil War and the contributions of many different groups of people. These books are essential for our project. Please help us.
