My Students

My students are in need of compelling reading material that makes them eager to read. Our language arts program is lacking in great literature and this book is wonderful for teaching. My students become so engrossed with the story that they beg me to read it to them!

I work in a public school in California.

My district is dealing with some major budget cuts and I fear my students will feel the pain next year. Our class sizes are increasing and we have less money for school supplies. My students are all exceptionally bright, well behaved and they love to learn. Many of them are immigrants and more than half of the school is very low income. My students work very hard and they deserve the best education possible!

My Project

Hopefully every adult knows how wonderful it feels to read a book that engages you so completely, you almost forget you are reading. Many of my students have not had that feeling until they read this book. The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane is full of vivid imagery, adventure, heartbreak, and happiness. Once started, my students beg me to read it to them. If I have a complete class set, we can read it together and hopefully be able to reflect more deeply on the story. Besides being an enjoyable book, it is also great for teaching. It is the perfect novel for teaching reading comprehension strategies and serves as a great model for fiction writing. My students also tend to read other books by the same author after this book, which is a great habit to get into.

Having quality literature in an elementary classroom can mean the difference between excited, engaged learners and bored students who are zoning out.

I want to read books with my class that inspire them to be lifelong readers and writers. Kate DICamillo is an amazing children's author and my students really react to her stories. Some of my kids were actually teary eyed at the end of this book. You would really be helping an amazing group of kids if you donate to this project.
