A 'Hands-On' Approach for Teaching Music - Part I

My students need a digital keyboard capable of performing a wide variety of sounds. This will be the master keyboard for a small keyboard lab station in our classroom.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school has an exciting new music program! I want to give students a true general music experience by exposing them to instrumental and choral music, as well as a keyboard lab. A keyboard lab is the ideal setting for reinforcing music theory concepts - the common language of all music.

My students (grades K-5) come from diverse backgrounds.

They attend a charter school, and the musical experience will be new for them. Needless to say, they are very excited about the upcoming academic year. I seek to inspire them by providing as wide a musical experience as possible. In this classroom, children from the elementary levels will learn to love, express, describe, and even perform music. These children will be exposed to singing, rhythm and tonal activities with instruments, and even a small keyboard lab where they will reinforce music theory concepts learned in class. Having taught at keyboard labs at the university level and at nationally-renowned schools and music summer camps, I am convinced that this is a superb way to encourage student-centered learning by giving students tangible ways to grasp concepts. Music will enrich these students' lives in unimaginable ways by its transformative power. Learning music will empower them to love and understand its wonders!

My Project

I have requested a digital keyboard capable of performing a wide variety of sounds. This keyboard is very capable with the variety of sounds it offers for the cost. It also has the potential of being the master keyboard in a lab. Adding three or four more keyboards in the future will empower 8-10 students at a time (sharing a keyboard) to learn music, work collaboratively, and put into practice the ideas learned in class. For example, after a rhythmic movement activity, students would have the opportunity to produce melodies using the same rhythms. They will explore their creative powers thanks to such a lab! Besides the music theory advantage of this lab (which this keyboard helps to start), students will appreciate many other benefits offered by MIDI technology. All one needs to do is connect this keyboard to a computer via a USB cable, and one has an endless possibility of MIDI sounds at our disposal. All music students should know what different instruments sound like, and this keyboard helps facilitate such a learning experience.

I have taught music at all age levels - and it is common for universities and music pedagogy programs to have keyboard labs to reinforce the musical concepts being taught.

Given that children are very much tactile learners, this is even more true for them. Your generous contribution will help students have a true 'hands-on' musical experience. My students come to truly love music. This is due to the firsthand and concrete personal experience they have making music. Thank you for your help!
