A Changing World: Teaching with Multimedia in the Classroom

My Students

Last year, our high school scored 4% proficiency on the California Standard Tests for math. Our major goal, as a class this year, is to significantly increase our number of proficient students taking the California Standard Tests.

Over 50% of my students are Latino and many are English Language Learners, meaning they are still acquiring the necessary language skills to speak and perform in an academic setting.

These students come from very diverse cultures and countries where, at times, their education has been overlooked or inadequate. Now that many of them find themselves here in the US, we owe them the same opportunities and resources afforded to students from wealthier zip codes. My students come from a generation that has grown up on technology, and as a result I have seen a great response to my multimedia-based lectures. I would like to further incorporate technology into my teaching, in the form of video and animation-based content. Apple's Final Cut Pro X program would allow me to put together videos and animated graphics demonstrating mathematical concepts. This added content would enrich my lectures, while keeping students engaged.

My Project

My students are incredibly bright. Unfortunately, they're struggling with foundational skills in math. Not only are they struggling in math, they are struggling with the English language as well, which greatly affects their comprehension of math concepts. My students, in particular my English language learners, would benefit immensely from more visually-based lessons. This technology provides me with the best solution to make this happen. It would allow me to directly engage all of my students and to add greater impact to my lessons. I believe that my goal of building upon the existing curriculum in an innovative, technological and engaging way closely matches the objectives of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education.

The ability to disseminate information to my students in both a verbal and visual way would increase each student's chances of grasping and learning the lesson, especially among those of my students who are still mastering the English language.
