Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a first year teacher for the First Grade. My typical day will begin with silent reading, followed by guided reading groups. My goal is to have all my students at level or higher by the end of the year. My biggest challenge is having lack of materials to ensure my goals.
My students attend school in a high poverty area in Northern New Jersey.
Majority of all the kids receive free breakfast and lunch. My students do not have unlimited resources like many other children in New Jersey do. They deserve to have a great collection of books to learn from and read for pleasure. They deserve to take 30 minutes a day to escape into another realm of reading. This past year, my school became known as a "Renew School." I want to move my students forward and send them on the right path for their futures. I want my students to enjoy school work and want to continue their education on higher levels.
My Project
My students participate in silent reading, guided reading, and the daily five every day of the week. I want them to have a variety of books to chose from that suits their interests. I want their minds to be put to work through reading. I want them to enjoy reading and find topics that spark their interests. This is my first year as a first grade teacher and I do not have a large library for my students to use. I want to encourage the joys of reading while helping them become more proficient readers. I want them to engage in non fiction texts to give them a better understanding of the outside world.
Having someone give me the gift of guided reading books and books leveled for First Graders will allow my students a chance to not only learn from reading but love reading.
It will give me many more opportunities to teach my students about different authors, about the outside world, animals, bugs, presidents, different cultures. It will give me an opportunity to broaden their knowledge and help keep them engaged with age appropriate texts.
